Yes.
Yes, I know of a few who've done it at a couple of different firms (all for family/marriage reasons). The firms both accomodated the requests.
YMMV, of course. I don't see the harm in asking if you have a good reason, unless you're tipping them off that you're going to leave.
YMMV?
I'm concerned that just asking is a tip off if they dont accomodate.
gayle,
i assume the following (1) you are a junior to mid-level associate, (2) at a mid to large firm, and (3) that your particular practice area has a presence in the office you want to transfer to. if i am correct, consider my two-cents:
ask. explain to your partner/mentor how much you love the firm and the practice, but that you also are considering a move to "x" city. let the partner know that you want to stay with the firm and, at the same time, explain why your move would benefit the firm/client (or at least not be disruptive). if the office you want to move to is in a different time zone, offer to be flexible with your hours to accomidate the firm's needs. if you are a good associate, this will probably work.
pete.
Yes. I moved from the 28th floor to the 31st floor.
My office is based on seniority. 3 more people ahead of me need to retire or quit before I get a window office...
I requested to switch undergrad career counselors because the first one told me I need to get away from my family.
The second one told me I should go to HofsTTTra; I instead went to law school in New England (T3 which I thought would overtake HofsTTTra; I was wrong on that one but HofsTTTra still sucks and is grossly overrated). She did not like my family either.
