Sales Assistant promotion up to General Counsel?
Through diligent networking, I have been offered an interview for a sales assistant position at a pretty presigious investment management house. I plan to parlay that position into something in the legal department (as ATL reported today, legal departments are downsizing http://abovethelaw.com/2009/04/in-house_counsel_layoff_watch.php , so I am looking for an alternative way to get my foot in the door). My question is this - if I start as a sales assistant in a Long Island branch office of a top tier investment management firm (think Edward Jones, Ameriprise, Raymond James, etc., type office), could I then lateral into the legal and compliance side and then work my way up to the General Counsel level of the company when the economy turns around?

Good question, Magna.
The sad answer is: No. Although I'm sure that you are doing well for yourself -- having landed an interview for a sales assistant position at a Long Island-based investment management house and all -- but you went to a sub-par law school. I'm not saying that Hofstra is bad, some of you all do well (like yourself), but your school is not as good as some of NYC's bigger names, think NYU, Fordham, Columbia, Brooklyn, and St. Johns.
Good luck at the interview, just know you will never be the GC.
Sincerely,
Fordham c/o 2002
If GC stands for "Guido Cocksucker," then yes, it is within your reach.

Patterson lateraled into being the governor, and he went to Hofstra--so maybe, yeah.
I happen to like him, but I'm in the minority, I know.
Yo Fordham...CORNELL is a NY law school too!
