Law Revue Video Contest

Above The Law’s Inaugural Law Revue Contest
Congratulations to UVA’s Con Luv!

Law Revue Video Contest.jpgThanks to everyone who participated in Above the Law’s First Ever Law Revue Video Contest. We thank the nominators, who drew our attention to so many worthy — and some unworthy — contenders; the voters, who viewed the six finalists, and cast almost 10,000 ballots; and, of course, the talented law students (and faculty members) who created these delightful entertainments.

The contest turned into a struggle between two contenders:

Boston University: My New Outline

University of Virginia: Con Luv (aka Hot Bodies of Law)

My New Outline took an early lead, but Con Luv quickly pulled even. It was a close race until the home stretch, when last-minute voters showed some love to Con Luv.

There were allegations of cheating, on both sides. We asked our friends at Vizu to audit the results — which explains our delay in announcing the results, for which we apologize — and Vizu gave the contest a clean bill of health. There were a handful of IP addresses that submitted multiple votes, but (1) this is not per se evidence of gaming, since multiple users can be on the same IP address; and (2) even throwing out all of these votes, Con Luv would still prevail, by several hundred votes. We’re not talking Coleman v. Franken here.

So congratulations, UVA Law! You’re not only the Coolest Law School in America, but one of the most creative as well. This has to be good for a few spots in next year’s U.S. News rankings.

More discussion — a full breakdown of the results, details about next year’s contest, and your chance to sound off in the comments about who wuz robbed — after the jump.

Law Revue Video Contest: The polls close at midnight!

Law Revue Video Contest.jpgHappy Sunday. Thanks for visiting Above The Law this weekend.

We just wanted to remind you that voting in the (first) Annual Law Revue Video Contest ends tonight at the stroke of midnight. Or actually at 11:59 p.m. So if you haven’t yet watched the best in Law Revue humor and found what makes you laugh hardest, we advise you do so soon.

To see Northeastern’s gunner Lion, UVA’s adderal-fueled serenade and Backstreet Boys take on constitutional law, NYU’s Barbri Girl and South Park-inspired Arthur Miller animation, and Boston University’s version of My New Haircut, check out our post on The Finalists.

As of 7:54 a.m. on Sunday morning, BU’s Outline and UVA’s Hot Bodies are leading in the polls. BU has the tiniest of leads:

The stars that appear in the winning video will receive fame & glory (of course), as well as ATL t-shirts, ATL gavel-shaped stress balls, and a round of drinks with the ATL editorial team (but the Law Revue stars have to come to New York to claim the drinks prize).

Vote after the jump. The clock is ticking.

Above The Law’s Inaugural Law Revue Contest 2009
The Finalists

Law Revue Video Contest.jpgIt’s the moment (some of) you have been waiting for. We’re ready to announce the six finalists in ATL’s First Ever Law Revue Video Contest.

We received many (many, many) submissions. We ordered sushi delivered to our SoHo office and pulled Biglaw hours to watch them all. As you may imagine, after many (many, many) hours of videos, our eyes were starting to glaze over, our ears were beginning to bleed, and our appreciation for the delicate intersection of legalese and funnies was beginning to fade.

But these six videos managed to shine through all that and make us laugh. Earlier this week, we gave you the (Dis)Honorable Mentions. (Excuse our harsh judging of those — we enjoyed channeling the acerbity of ATL commenters.) Now, we give you the finalists, hailing from NYU (2), UVA (2), Boston University, and Northeastern School of Law. We dare you to try to watch them without wetting your pants with laughter. Or at least emitting a little chuckle.

We’re also asking you to choose your favorite. Find the videos after the jump, and take our reader poll to help crown the first winner of the ATL’s Inaugural Law Revue Contest. Polls close Sunday at midnight.

Above The Law’s Inaugural Law Revue Contest 2009
(Dis)Honorable Mentions

Law Revue Video Contest.jpgEarlier this month, we asked for submissions for Above the Law’s first annual Law Revue Video contest. The nominees came pouring in from across the country.

Your faithful ATL editors / judges spent hours — or was it days? — reviewing the many submissions. We’ve learned that there is a lot of creative talent hidden away in law libraries. We’ve also learned that “pitch” is a precious and rare commodity, vital to prevent blood from streaming out of your audience’s ears.

We’ve selected six finalists for you to enjoy. We’ll ask you to vote for the best of them, to determine the winner of ATL’s first ever Law Revue contest — in our next post.

First, we’ll subject you to the suffering give you a taste of the entire range of submissions, with some of the best (and worst) of those that didn’t make the top six. Join the ATL editors in an exploration of everything that is beautiful and oh-so-terrible when law students take comedy into their own hands — after the jump.

The First Annual Law Revue Video Contest

Law Revue Video Contest.jpgEach year, at law schools across the nation, a few brave — some might say foolhardy — students take a break from outlining case law, and set it to music instead. The Annual Law Revue (or whatever it’s called at your law school) allows students to parody the law and life in law school. And now, thanks to the wonder of file-sharing sites, the musical creations last beyond one night’s performance, and can be enjoyed (or hated) over and over again on YouTube.

Students from NYU and UVA sent along some videos this year. When we posted them, students from other schools started sending us videos, usually accompanied by a little trash-talking. Everyone claimed their videos were funnier than other schools’ videos. Which gave us an idea.

We will be holding a national Law Revue Video contest. Our first ever. (But hopefully not our last. If your school hasn’t yet had its Law Revue, no worries; you can submit an entry for next year’s contest.)

Here are the rules:

1. Your video must be online somewhere. Send us the link at tips@abovethelaw.com with the subject line “Law Revue Video Contest Submission - School Name.
2. Send us that submission by Monday, April 6, at 11:59 p.m.
3. Your editors here at ATL will choose our top five and post them.
4. ATL readers will vote to choose the funniest of the bunch. Beyond the glory of ATL contest-winning fame, there will be a prize.

An unofficial rule: please send us funny videos only.

A non-sequitur: During our “research” for this post, we discovered that an “I’m feeling lucky” Google search for “law revue” takes you to Columbia Law’s site. How’d they snag that?

We look forward to much laughter, merry-making, and some bewilderment when there are too many inside jokes.
