All Bets Are Off When You Kill a Lawyer's Dog
Police in Florida shot and killed a solo practitioner's dog in October. Did they really think that they could just kill a lawyer's dog and get away with it? If this personal injury attorney could've brought a wrongful death claim for his dog, we're sure he would've. But here's what happened because the attorney wouldn't sit and lie down after his dog's death.... -

Stephen McDaniel Indicted for Murder of Lauren Giddings
This should not come as a great shock, since he’s been in jail since July, but Stephen Mark McDaniel has been indicted by a grand jury for the murder of Lauren Giddings. McDaniel and Giddings graduated earlier this year from Mercer Law School, where they were classmates, and they were also neighbors in the Barristers […] -

Judges Are Getting Concerned About 'Undeniably Creative' Warrantless Cell Phone Tracking
There has been justifiably a lot of talk over the last few days about U.S. v. Jones, and the privacy issues it raises. Our editor emeritus Kashmir Hill was fortunate enough to hear oral arguments at the Supreme Court in person, alongside top legal reporters such as Jeffrey Toobin and Adam Liptak. But when it […] -

Madness and Tear Gas in Oakland; Lawyers Join the Fray
It has been a strange couple of days. I woke up on Tuesday at 5:30 a.m. to finish some writing. It was still dark, but I heard several helicopters buzzing near my house. First Circuit Has No Sympathy For Cops Who Say, 'Don't Tape Me, Bro!'
One of the most important -- and overlooked -- technological developments of the last five-odd years is the ease with which anyone can record police doing their jobs and throw the video on YouTube. The technology can be a great deterrent against police misconduct. So it's really, seriously disturbing when police try to intimidate witnesses into turning off their cellphone cameras. It's even more nauseating when someone gets arrested for simply filming police activity. Luckily, a recent decision from First Circuit unambiguously told police to cut it out.... -

Police Better Off Accidentally Shooting Black People Than Family Dogs
The Chicago Police Department shot an innocent black Labrador Retriever, a family pet who posed no real threat to the officers. As such, the police have been punished and roundly excoriated, and a federal jury awarded the family a huge sum for damages. Editor Elie Mystal thinks this is fine, and he agrees with the jury's decision. He just don't like living in a world where shooting a dog is a bigger liability risk for a police officer than shooting a person....
