You are talking about someone who lead the country into a golden age of economic prosperity; an age where Wall Street law firms were on top of the world; an age where cocaine was plentiful and always of top quality; an age where M&A deals were so big, and so great in number, that the corporations would buy all the lawyers on the deals $5,000 watches at closing; an age where we would always fly first class when travelling on business; and, finally, an age where only the true elite would land biglaw jobs.

I am, of course, talking about the greatest decade in human history -- the 19-fucking-80's -- sponsored by the great President Reagan.

Back in the 80s young associates had everything you mentioned and more. It was truly an amazing time to be a lawyer, as others have noted.

As an 80s guy, I'm not a political dude. But anyone can see that the Obama is destroying the foundation of our once great profession. Young Obama rejected BIGLAW. He had the option but decided to pursue his socialist agenda instead, with the hope that it would lead him to the oval office. This decision guides his every move to this day.

Hopefully one day we will elect someone like Reagan who will usher in a new golden age for BIGLAW. I'm not optimistic but who knows.

Gutsy question. There are two kinds of people in this world: sheep and sharks. In my day, BIGLAW lawyers were most definitely sharks; in this pathetic decade, however, most young attorneys are sheepish beyond belief.

Sharks are winners, and they don't look back because they have no necks. Necks are for sheep.

This decade continues to depress me beyond belief. During the golden age of biglaw, the glorious 1980s, we young associates did not have to worry about checking a screen (mobile or stationary) every two minutes. As a budding litigator, I did have to work late (past 7:00pm) on occasion. Sometimes just sitting around waiting for paper to be delivered; other times dictating complex briefs into my dictaphone.

But for the love of god, once I was home with my trophy wife, I was free to do as I wish. Indeed, I enjoyed some nice evenings watching laserdic's on my state-of-the-art home theatre.

I feel for you cats, I really do.
