A buddy of mine equated being laid off like being broken up with. If you liked the girl then you are devastated and if you hate the girl/relationship then you are just annoyed that they broke up with you before you could break up with them. Either way it isn't a good feeling.

I don't think 1L's really think about these events are really going to help them in the long run, especially in today's economic environment. So they probably had something better to do then carry on meaningless small talk with people they most likely won't work with.
