They aren't any uglier than other fashion atrocities, like Uggs. And they are practical for working out in the garden... just hose them off.
As for escalators, they are probably more susceptible because of the soft plastic, which could get caught under the lip of the collapsing step in front of you, I suppose. If you're an idiot.
I'll second Topolobampo/Frontera both are excellent. I don't think you'd get away with Charlie Trotters, Alinea, Blackbird, Tru, or Arun's... unless you have a really generous partner. But they are all *excellent* Chicago restaurants--none are really lunch places anyway.
If you do want to try some local favs, as someone mentioned, Manny's is awesome, and Harold's has some *damn* fine chicken. And I'll also second Lao Szcheuan--best Chinese in the city, bar none.
Stay away from Pazzo or the Rosebud on Rush (touristville). Coco Pazzo isn't bad and the Rosebud on Taylor is the one to go to if you want that sort of thing.
What? Spak is great... at least he's actually funny.
This guy is a fan of Scalia *and* Jimmy Carter???
Something doesn't smell right.

Or Another Update: Hey Teacher, Leave Those Kids (and Their Internet) Alone!" Friday, April 18, 2008 3:54 PM
Okay, if you cannot check your e-mail, check game scores, *and* pay attention in class, you don't have the skills to sit through a meeting with partners in Biglaw.
And if you get *distracted* by other people checking their e-mail while you're trying to follow a discussion, you really will *never* make it in Biglaw.
Chicago's only hurting their students by not teaching them real world skills. Instead of turning *off* Internet access, they should pay undergrads to sit in classes, click away on Blackberries, and look up occasionally and say, "I'm sorry, could we go back to the last point."
