Man Using Laptop in the OfficeGetting a new practice off the ground requires multiple purchases, from hardware (like computers and printers) to operational support (like billing systems and marketing tools). Through a series of posts, we’ll share some of Smokeball’s tips and tricks to help you narrow down the best options for your small law firm.

Read on for a few hardware recommendations to help you get started.

Computers
If don’t already have a laptop or desktop, choose a good starter option that will carry you through your first two years of practice. Consider ordering through CDW as a first-time business customer as it could save you a few bucks. Computers worth checking out include:

  • Lenovo Yoga Series ($850-$1,200)—These laptops are lightweight and double as tablets. You can also extend to a larger monitor for a traditional desktop feel.
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 4 ($899-$1,599)—If you’re in the market for the power of a desktop with the mobility of a tablet, this is one to check out.
  • Macs (prices vary)—Apple products stand the test of time but are an investment. Before you purchase, make a list of software you’ll need and make sure each is compatible with the Mac OS.

For scanning needs, consider the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 ($415-$495). The investment is worth it as this diverse device comes with the full version of Adobe Acrobat X. If you’re on the go or don’t have a scanner nearby, the Tiny Scan app turns your smartphone into a scanner, converting photos into PDFs.

Printing has gotten simpler through the Pocket Printer ($199), perfect for the attorney on the go. Install the app on your smartphone, then send documents to this small robotic printer, which works like a mini-robot that walks across a blank sheet of paper. After each page is finished printing, lay down a new blank page.
