Charlotte Alumni Demand Resignations Of Law School Leadership

A harsh rebuke from the school's alumni.

5876The ongoing trainwreck at Charlotte School of Law has not escaped the notice of the school’s alumni, who are watching the value of their degrees diminished by the slipshod administration of the school and its defiance of mandates from the ABA and the Department of Education to get its act together. While the school has made its first, furtive attempt to get right with the powers-that-be, the alumni see a school that needs a damn food bank for its students and hits back at critics with wildly disproportionate threats — and they’re fed up.

Last month, 766 members of the Charlotte School of Law Alumni Association voted overwhelmingly to issue a statement calling for a change in leadership at the law school. Last week, the Alumni Association’s Executive Board met to discuss this statement, and the final statement, on behalf of the Alumni Association, was approved by electronic ballot of the Executive Board last night.

The letter, available in full here, is direct, calling on Dean Jay Conison and President Chidi Ogene to resign immediately:

On behalf of its members (“Alumni”), it is with regret that this Charlotte School of Law Alumni Association (“Alumni Association”) demands your resignations as Dean and President of the Charlotte School of Law (“CSL”). We request that you commence an orderly transition of your positions immediately to minimize further adverse impact to the students, faculty, and Alumni. The current CSL administration (Administration) should present potential candidates for your replacement to the remaining faculty members and the Alumni Association’s Executive Board for consideration and consent to ensure your replacements will commit themselves to the best interests of the students, faculty, and Alumni.

In the absence of your resignations, CSL’s reputation and thereby the reputations of its students, faculty, and alumni will suffer further irreparable harm. The Alumni Association does not make this demand lightly, but after considerable discussion and consideration, which culminated in a vote of no confidence by an overwhelming majority of our members and fellow alumni. The Alumni Association trusts you will give thoughtful consideration to our demands and act promptly to resign from your positions to allow the administration and the InfiLaw system to recommit themselves to the founding principles on which CSL was established.

I fully expect Charlotte’s administration to respond by revoking the law degrees of every signatory to the letter.
