A Famous Female Judge On Why More Women Need To Be On The Bench

Diversity in the judiciary is incredibly important.

It is a priority to achieve better representation of half the human race on the bench. Judging should be informed as much by the experience of leading a woman’s life as it is by the experience of leading a man’s.

— Judge Brenda Hale, who will become the U.K. Supreme Court’s first female president in October, emphasizing the need for the British judiciary to attract and promote women, in a speech given at a law school last week. Earlier this week, women gained access to the men’s dressing room in Southwark Crown Court, where barristers don black gowns and white wigs, costumes required by most courts.
