Above the Law 'Power 100' Law Firm Rankings Are Out

Looks like we can actually measure how little people respect Jones Day now.

It’s a little bit late this year, but today we can release our law firm rankings. The ATL Power 100 measures which firms talented people want to work at, and this year, we can report that pretty much nobody wants to work at Jones Day anymore.

Jones Day has decided to take the plunge as the Biglaw firm most associated with President Donald Trump. Don McGahn, a Jones Day partner, took on the job of White House Counsel. The firm was quick and eager to associate itself with the new administration in advertising during 2017.

These decision have consequences. Maybe clients like feeling like they are represented by a firm associated with Trump. But lawyers? No. Lawyers don’t want anything to do the firm.

Jones Day fell 33 spots in our rankings, year-over-year, from #18 to #51. Jones Day declined in every objective data point we measured. But the objective points are only half of the methodology. The other half is a reputation survey, and that’s where Jones Day got stuffed in a locker and ridiculed by all the cool kids.

If you are a Jones Day lawyer who wonders if your friends make fun of you behind your back, the answer appears to be “yes.” A lot. Like, they’re not laughing with you.

Overall, there was a bit of volatility in this year’s edition. Last year’s #1, Cravath, fell to #7. Kirkland dropped six spots. Davis Polk rocketed up 16 spots. The law firms moved around.

But Jones Day got hammered. It must be tough on the recruiting trails for them. Donald Trump really does wreck the reputation of every single thing he touches.
