Biglaw Firm Hit With Cybersecurity Incident Earlier This Month

The firm says no client data was breached.

A new report by Bloomberg Law reveals that the Biglaw firm of Foley & Lardner was hit by a cybersecurity incident earlier this month. Though a spokesperson for the firm declined to specify the nature of the security event, they did note that client data was not breached during the incident.

“Like many other organizations in this increasingly digital world, earlier this month we incurred a cyber event that caused a disruption to our IT systems,” Jill Schachner Chanen, external communications manager at Foley & Lardner, told Bloomberg Law Oct. 26 in an email.

“We have security safeguards in place designed to protect our systems and data and have confirmed no unauthorized access to client data,” she said.

Biglaw firms are charged with maintaining their clients’ data in the strictest of confidence, so it’s no surprise that Chanen’s statement focused on that aspect of the breach. She also noted that keeping confidential data safe from cuber threats will “continue to be our highest priority.”

From this initial information, it seems Foley & Lardner faired much better than other Biglaw firms when it comes to cybersecurity. Last year mega firm DLA Piper found themselves “paralyzed” by a ransomware attack, and law firms continue to be vulnerable to other cyber threats — a fact even 15-year olds know.
