Magic Circle Firm Gets On Board With Biglaw Bonus Structure — Including Special Bonuses

The firm is keeping up with the market!

The bitter cold days of winter are officially here, judging by the snow the recent nor’easter dumped on New England and the plummeting temperatures all up and down the eastern sea board. But there’s one way Biglaw associates can keep warm — by counting all the money that’s being showered on them! That’s right, it’s bonuses season and we’re happy to report yet another Biglaw firm has joined the bonus party.

On Friday, Allen & Overy announced year-end bonuses that match the prevailing market rate. The bonus scale is as follows (you can read the full memo on the next page):

Class of 2020: $15,000 (pro-rated)
Class of 2019: $15,000
Class of 2018: $25,000
Class of 2017: $50,000
Class of 2016: $65,000
Class of 2015: $80,000
Class of 2014: $90,000
Class of 2013: $100,000
Class of 2012: $100,000

Plus the Magic Circle firm is also signaling they’re playing ball with the elite of Biglaw. Back in the fall, it was trending among Biglaw firms to pay special bonuses, in appreciation of associates‘ hard work during the pandemic. Of course, some, ahem Cravath, decided to wait on special fall bonuses. But now A&O has joined the firms handing out the special bonuses now — better late than never! Those special bonuses range from $7,500 to $40,000, depending on class year, and are in addition to the year-end bonus numbers. So yeah, Biglaw associates have a lot to be thankful for! As a tipster at the firm notes:

Associates are thrilled and relieved that the firm’s commitment to expanding in the US market is reflected in its appreciation for the associates’ contribution’

All bonuses at the firm will be paid on January 15, 2021.
