Tech Company Spins Off From Biglaw Roots

Joinder spreads its wings.

Orrick Labs product Joinder has spun off into its own company. The venture is run by former Orrick partner, Don Keller, and Jim Brock. The platform operates as a “distributed document management system,” where, instead of having all the documents in a central repository, they are where the work is being done. In this sense, it combines document management, calendaring, task management and collaboration under one roof.

Joinder offers ready-made solutions, initially developed to address the needs of Orrick’s clients. These solutions span four practice areas: litigation, corporate and IP, compliance, and legal operations. The entire platform is designed to serve established and growing legal departments, with no coding, consultants, or extended implementation required. For the first time, corporate legal departments are able to take ownership and control of their internal and external team’s execution via strategic playbooks.

It’s designed to serve corporate legal departments as a comprehensive matter management solution, charging the in-house department while allowing free access to outside counsel.

It’s another instance of the promise of Biglaw incubation.

“When we launched Orrick Labs, our goal was to tackle problems for which we did not see adequate solutions in the market,” said Mitch Zuklie, Orrick Chairman and CEO. “Joinder, the result of our client’s demands for more insight into their records, is the first product to spin out from the Lab. And it is just that: a better platform for legal engagement, built by a team that understands how lawyers and legal departments work together. We are thrilled to spin Joinder out to an independent company, led by a top-notch team.”

A couple months ago we discussed the pitfalls of legal tech partnering with law firms. On the one hand, the partnership brings instant buy in and built-in feedback. On the other hand, it can impose a kind of tunnel vision on the process. Orrick Labs has managed to strike the right balance and spawn a product that can move out the nest and take on the world.
