Will Joe Biden Ever Get Around To Canceling Student Loans?

The clock is ticking on that promise, and student borrowers are still waiting for action.

— Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, offering a brief glimmer of hope on President Joe Biden’s plans to pursue mass student loan cancellation. In April, Biden asked Cardona and the Education Department to prepare a memo summarizing his legal authority to cancel debt through an executive action. During his campaign for the presidency, Biden promised to “forgive a minimum of $10,000/person of federal student loans.” Thus far, the Biden administration has canceled billions of dollars of student loan debt for borrowers with total and permanent disabilities and borrowers scammed by their schools.
