Emerging Corporate Legal Departments: Jumpstart Your Legal Tech Capabilities

Second ‘Emerging Legal Departments: Legal Tech 101 Roundtable’ event set for March

General Counsel of emerging legal departments juggle an astonishing number of roles. While they’re keeping tabs on the legal matters — both internal and external — that impact their companies, they’re also monitoring legal developments and industry-related business trends at large. With an already overflowing to-do list, it can be tough to schedule time for staying on top of advances in technology and innovation.

On Tuesday, March 19th, legal industry leaders Monica Zent and Stephanie Corey, along with Evolve the Law (ETL), Above the Law’s Legal Innovation Center, will hold its second roundtable, “Emerging Legal Departments: Legal Tech 101” at The Pad in Sunnyvale, hosted by SimpleLegal.

Back by popular demand, the discussion will again be led by Monica Zent, founder of the innovative alternative legal solutions provider ZentLaw. Zent is also founder and CEO of legal technology companies such as Foxwordy. Stephanie Corey, co-founder of UpLevel Ops, a legal strategy and operations consulting firm, will guide the talk as well. Corey also co-founded the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC).

The discussion is intended to provide general counsel of emerging legal departments — plus legal ops professionals and legal tech solution providers — an overview of how law departments can onboard legal technology. Attendees will learn about the steps to a successful tech implementation, including preparation, options, solutions and important questions to consider.  The event is open to ETL members and others by invitation.

“At our inaugural roundtable in December, participants were very happy with the intimate setting that enabled a high level of interaction and collaboration,” said Zent. “We’ll build on that momentum at this next event, offering tactical advice and takeaways that the in-house community can use to start planning.”

“This event focuses on emerging corporate law departments that may lack the resources of a larger, more established legal department,” said Corey. “It’s exciting to bring that community together with legal tech experts who can offer tangible solutions.”

Joining Corey and Zent on the panel are:

  • Lucy Bassli, Deputy General Counsel of Legal Ops at Snowflake (formerly of MSFT)
  • Tal Samet, Senior Corporate Counsel at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc.
  • Paul Porrini, General Counsel of Smartsheet
  • Stephan Eberle, General Counsel of Scale Venture Partners
