Big Marketing for Small Law Firms

5 Fast, Effective Tips for Promoting Your Firm

When you’re a small law firm owner, every hour and every dollar has to count.

You know you need to market your services to keep your client roster full, but how much time should you spend on it? How much money should you throw at it? Which medium is best? Does social media really matter?

You’re busy as it is, so let’s take the guesswork out of this.

If you play your cards right, you can stay in front of your community with a solid marketing strategy that keeps leads coming but doesn’t break the bank or overtake your calendar.

Here are 5 things you can start doing today to position yourself as the best and obvious choice for your prospects:

  1. Create valuable blog content– You didn’t set out to be a writer, so if you don’t love to write, hire a qualified 3rd party to do it for you. We live in a content-driven time. Audiences are used to consuming content and spend hours of their day in front of a screen. When you start to post content regularly, not only does your SEO improve but you establish yourself as the recognizable expert & build authority in your niche.
  2. Give something away for free– Everyone loves a freebie. You could go the old-school route and give away a pen or a fridge magnet or you could go a bit deeper. Give away a free checklist of everything people should consider when composing their living will. Give away a free eBook that outlines the most important things couples need to consider when filing for divorce. Whatever area of practice you’re in, you can find something of value to give away for free as a token of goodwill (and a backdoor sales strategy!)
  3. Sponsor community events– Most of the times lawyers will do this by hosting a table with brochures on it that no one really wants to stop at. Instead, sponsor an event that gives you exposure to PNC’s or Referral sources! For example, as an estate planning attorney, you might sponsor or volunteer at a senior citizen’s community. And if you really want to be the person scooping ice cream at the community 4th of July celebration or sponsoring a pizza party for the High School Football team – find a creative way to tie it into your brand! Stay in front of your community as a contributing member. You’ll stay top of mind and organically become a household name.
  4. Host a meet-up or happy hour– Choose a topic that’s relevant to your niche and host a free meet-up. Invite your community to come and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and get vital, free information about their…(insert your area of interest.)
  5. Build Your Team 100–  The ‘Team 100’ referral program is perhaps the most powerful referral-generating program there is. It has been adapted for the busy lawyer who owns a small law firm, based on original work by New York Times Bestselling author and internationally acclaimed expert on networking, Bob Burg and marketing expert, David Frey, who learned about it from the late Thomas Leonard.

The idea is to educate 100 (actually 99 – because you’re one of them!) other professionals on what you do and at the same time, ask them to tell you what it is they do. No favors, no begging, no debt, no keeping score. Just an honest, generous and powerful approach.

Give it a shot!

And don’t forget to measure your outcomes. You’ll see very quickly which initiatives are working, which aren’t and where your focus, time and money should be.
