But with a little bit of techno-charged pixie dust, the dream of high-powered representation for run-of-the-mill divorce cases is now a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Los Angeles attorney\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wcmfamilylaw.com\/attorneys\/\">Laura Wasser\u00a0<\/a>&#8212; whose clients have <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laura_Wasser\">included<\/a> Angelina Jolie, Ryan Reynolds, Heidi Klum, Ashton Kutcher, Christina Aguilera, and other celebrities &#8212; launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsovereasy.com\/\">It\u2019s Over Easy<\/a>, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abajournal.com\/news\/article\/lawyer_for_stars_launches_do_it_yourself_divorce_website\">assisted-DIY divorce site<\/a> with three levels of service, ranging from a $750 package that will complete forms based on a user\u2019s responses to questions to a $2,500 plan (plus processing and filing fees) that will file divorce papers for both parties and includes a 90-minute phone consult and email support from a \u201cfamily law consultant.\u201d In addition, all users have access to videos by Ms. Wasser herself offering explanations of various legal concepts involved in the separation process, along with practical tips on how to manage insurance and co-parenting obligations. For now, the site is only available to couples divorcing in <a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/2018\/01\/25\/its-over-easy-online-divorce-laura-wasser\/\">California and New York County<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; though the site has placeholders for other states, which suggests that a national roll-out may be coming down the line.<\/p>\n<p>So do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsovereasy.com\/\">It\u2019s Over Easy<\/a>\u00a0users really receive representation by Ms. Wasser herself? Not really. In fact, the site\u2019s Terms of Service specify that it is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsovereasy.com\/terms_conditions\">not a law firm <\/a>and does not provide legal advice &#8212; though if that\u2019s the case, I\u2019m not sure what the purpose the phone consultations serve. In fact, it appears that most of the service offered is provided by \u201cfamily law experts\u201d which is apparently a PC code for the \u201cN\u201d word (i.e., <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2017\/10\/im-a-lawyer-youre-a-non-lawyer-whats-wrong-with-saying-that\/\">non-lawyer<\/a> ). (As an aside, it\u2019s rather ironic that under existing ethics rules, non-lawyers can call themselves \u201cexperts\u201d while Ms. Wasser herself can\u2019t.)\u00a0 The site also doesn\u2019t offer refunds, so if you\u2019ve signed up for a $2,500 divorce, only to reconcile a few days later, you won\u2019t see that money again. By contrast, there\u2019s really no such thing as a <a href=\"https:\/\/myshingle.com\/2007\/09\/articles\/client-relations\/beware-the-mis-named-non-refundable-retainer\/\">non-refundable fee<\/a>\u00a0for lawyers, except in very limited circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving these issues aside, It\u2019s Over Easy<em>\u00a0<\/em>comes across as a legitimate and\u00a0helpful site for its target clients. The site is well-designed and informative and it offers a service that\u2019s shockingly difficult to find &#8212;\u00a0i.e.<em>, <\/em>a relatively straightforward, cost-effective way for couples with a relatively amicable divorce to get the job done at a reasonable cost.\u00a0 Moreover, Ms. Wasser seems like the real deal &#8212; she\u2019s not only an accomplished family law practitioner, but according to her <a href=\"http:\/\/wcmfamilylaw.com\/attorneys\/\">bio<\/a>, she has also been involved with pro bono initiatives in family law for much of her career.<\/p>\n<p>Which raises the question: can lawyers compete with a brand name like Laura Wasser?\u00a0 That depends.\u00a0 It\u2019s Over Easy doesn\u2019t purport to address the needs of complex or acrimonious divorces, which means that a market still remains for lawyers who can capably handle bespoke divorce cases. Moreover, It\u2019s Over Easy also leaves the market open for innovative lawyers\u00a0 like Erin Levine of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hellodivorce.com\/\">Hello Divorce<\/a>, a site that offers some the same services (comparably priced) as It\u2019s Over Easy with one key distinction: clients have numerous opportunities to work directly with lawyers &#8212; and there\u2019s no \u201cwe are not a law firm\u201d disclaimer. In other words, lawyers can indeed compete with non-lawyer sites by being lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, however, it&#8217;s not about lawyers, but consumers &#8212; and they are undoubtedly the big winners in the increasingly competitive family law space.\u00a0\u00a0To be sure, some\u00a0clients will always want or need standard representation, while others may not be able to afford anything else than free legal aid.\u00a0 But for the vast number of clients in the middle who can\u2019t afford or don\u2019t need comprehensive representation, technology offers access to a range of options that continue to evolve.\u00a0 Even representation, albeit by proxy, by a lawyer to the stars.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-427757\" src=\"http:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Carolyn-Elefant-300x287.jpg\" alt=\"Carolyn Elefant\" width=\"187\" height=\"179\" \/><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/myshingle.com\/about\/about-carolyn\/\">Carolyn Elefant<\/a>\u00a0has been blogging about solo and small firm practice at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/myshingle.com\/\">MyShingle.com<\/a>since 2002 and operated her firm, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawofficesofcarolynelefant.com\/\">Law Offices of Carolyn Elefant PLLC<\/a>, even longer than that.
