It\u2019s like banning a smartphone. Instead of ignoring it and pretending it doesn\u2019t exist, we have guidelines for how to use carefully.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: larger\"><strong>What lawyers are finding is it can automate commodity low-rate work because there wasn\u2019t a budget to do that kind of work. We\u2019re spending the same amount of time on the matter but we can automate some work. We can dig deeper into issues. And then the lawyer is able to spend more time on the higher-value work for the client. We\u2019re seeing it more as a quality play for us. Lawyers can provide more value for the same amount of time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: larger\"><strong><em>&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reedsmith.com\/en\/professionals\/c\/cunningham-david\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Cunningham<\/a>, chief innovation officer at Reed Smith, in comments given to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.com\/2024\/01\/29\/we-asked-every-am-law-100-firm-how-theyre-using-gen-ai-heres-what-we-learned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Lawyer<\/a> concerning the firm&#8217;s use of generative artificial intelligence. Am Law reached out to members of the Am Law 100 to examine how those firms were using generative AI. Of the 41 firms that offered responses, the most common uses of generative AI are for summarizing documents\/generating transcripts (15), legal research (11), drafting marketing materials\/attorney bios (8), drafting legal material (7), and e-discovery (5).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-441281\" src=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Staci-Zaretsky.jpg\" alt=\"Staci Zaretsky\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><em><a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/author\/staci-zaretsky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Staci Zaretsky<\/a>\u00a0is a senior editor at Above the Law, where she&#8217;s worked since 2011.
