In our continuing effort to explore the various <\/span>nooks & crannies<\/span><\/a> of the legaltech world, we\u2019ve now taken up list creation by category.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each entry of our brand-new <\/span>Reference Manual of Legal Tech Lists <\/span><\/i>will explore a new category lurking in the dark recesses of legaltech \u2013 you know, <\/span>the kind that are buried deep down, of the sort you don\u2019t talk about at parties<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this segment of our series, we\u2019ll explore the five worst things about hosting legal tech panels:<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 1: Consensus Building<\/b><\/p>\n

You know, lawyers and legal-adjacent professionals are pretty smart people. They\u2019re doing all kinds of impressive stuff building technologies and advising businesses and individuals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet … try to get them together on creating an agenda for a presentation, and it\u2019s like herding feral cats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This person is ignoring your emails. This other person wants to talk about something that\u2019s not even related to the subject.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That person wants to try some new visual format (cat filters for all presenters), which you have to pretend to like, before rejecting out of hand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That other person is like, \u201cWhat if the whole program is an analogy for time travel?\u201d And then, I slam my head against the laptop, and say: \u201cAll right. I\u2019ll just draft something. Are you happy now?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 2: Tech Glitches\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

It\u2019s pretty much a corollary of Murphy\u2019s Law that, if you\u2019re gonna do a web-based technology panel, some tech glitch that didn\u2019t come up in the run-through is going to absolutely happen when you go live.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re the moderator, you\u2019ve just gotta work through it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like: \u201cUh oh, Chuck\u2019s video isn\u2019t working. But, let me assure you, you don\u2019t need to see him sitting in his kitchen. Just listen to the dulcet tones of his voice describing some tech process I don\u2019t understand, while we work through this issue.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Or: \u201cIt looks like Maria\u2019s internet just crashed, so now would be a good time for me to play some pan flute. Enjoy, because <\/span>Zamfir<\/span><\/a>\u2019s got nothing on me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yeah, you should learn the pan flute.<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 3: Dumbassery<\/b><\/p>\n

No, I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s a word \u2014 because I\u2019m a <\/span>dumbass<\/span><\/a>. You see, here\u2019s the thing about hosting legal tech panels: You\u2019re probably getting picked to do it because you\u2019re personable and non-offensive. It ain\u2019t because you\u2019ve figured out nuclear fission.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, when you get on for the show, the best course of action is just to nod, smile and look pretty. When it comes time for you to ask the inevitable question about how AI works, don\u2019t try to contribute to the conversation about \u201clarge language models,\u201d if your largest language model is simply the alphabet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tell a joke, make the segue and recede into the bushes, <\/span>like Homer Simpson<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 4: Pontificating Attendees<\/b><\/p>\n

Perhaps the only thing worse than pontificating panelists and moderators are attendees who feel as if they should snag just a tiny bit of the spotlight, while also getting their CLE credit, and sipping a moderate amount of Sprite, as they shift back and forth at their standing desks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because everyone <\/span>really<\/span><\/i> wants to hear what you have to say, Chip! Just kidding: That\u2019s not true, and you\u2019re making everyone\u2019s day worse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you feel yourself breaking into a 4-minute soliloquy on an item the panelists will undoubtedly bring up and cover in the next 5 minutes, maybe settle yourself, and ask a normal question instead. You can do it.\u00a0 I believe in you <\/span>like Santa Claus at the end of \u201cElf.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

No. 5: Showering<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the best things about the pandemic era was that knowledge workers didn\u2019t have to go into the office anymore, and, even now, most knowledge workers don\u2019t work full weeks in the office anymore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, when you were working in an office, you had to address the basic elements of human hygiene: like showering every day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if you smell a faint wafting of moldy bologna and feet, it may actually be you, because you haven\u2019t showered in three days.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re hosting a web conference, you need to get your hair unmatted and your teeth brushed. It kind of sucks, honestly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But until you can deepfake yourself, you\u2019ve gotta wash yourself. So grab the sponge on the stick, and get to it.<\/span><\/p>\n
