In our continuing effort to explore the various <\/span>nooks & crannies<\/span><\/a> of the legal tech world, we\u2019ve now taken up list creation by category.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each entry of our brand-new Reference Manual of Legal Tech Lists <\/em>will explore a new category lurking in the dark recesses of legal tech \u2014 you know, <\/span>the kind that are buried deep down, of the sort you don\u2019t talk about at parties<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this segment of our series, we\u2019ll explore the 5 best things about hosting legal tech panels. <\/span><\/p>\n

No. 1: Intelligence by Association<\/b><\/p>\n

Now, hosting tech panels <\/span>isn\u2019t all champagnes and roses<\/span><\/a>, my friends, but there are some cool things about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

You get to work with really smart people, who are doing some amazing things in the legal technology sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And the best thing about that is that you may <\/span>also<\/span><\/i> be deemed a visionary by working with these folks \u2014 <\/span>even if<\/span><\/i>, in reality, you\u2019re just some dummy who walked into this whole thing by accident. (Trust me, it happens *ahem.*)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, soak up those rays, when you\u2019re in the sunshine<\/span><\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 2: Building PowerPoints<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Look, trying to get lots of really intelligent people together to create a program agenda is like pulling teeth. It\u2019s <\/span>the worst<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But then comes the reward: building the PowerPoint. I don\u2019t know about you, but I love doing PowerPoints.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I try to pull off some bonkers stuff in those. Let\u2019s go for some wild, potentially copyrighted imagery. Let\u2019s try to pull this off with as little text as possible, so we can <\/span>explore the studio space<\/span><\/a> during the presentation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a fun challenge to find someone\u2019s high school yearbook picture to add to their bio page.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(I also recently taught my daughter how to create PowerPoints \u2014 which I realize is a weird thing to do. You know what they say, though: The apple doesn\u2019t fall far from the tree \u2014 even if I would never use <\/span>KeyNote<\/span><\/a>.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next slide!<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 3: New Client Leads!<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, most people are doing webinars for one reason: to get more business. I mean, that\u2019s cool; that\u2019s as it should be.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re running a business, it\u2019s probably a good thing that you actually believe strongly in what you\u2019re doing and that you can actually help people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And if you can come up with an interesting (and, non-salesy) presentation, you should be able to draw additional business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, when you\u2019re moderating, it looks like you\u2019re in charge, which is something that people gravitate to \u2014 so, that may be the best pathway to generating new work from tech panels.<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 4: New Referral Sources!<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you\u2019re running legal tech panels, you can take advantage of that opportunity to gain more clients \u2014 but that process does not always have to be direct.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got 3-5 panelists sitting directly in front of you, who may be actual referral sources for you, too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And those referral sources may be more consistent than the one-off client(s) you retain for your work on the program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So don\u2019t miss an opportunity to pitch those panelists on what you do, at least once \u2014 it should come up naturally, in the planning process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And don\u2019t forget to connect on social media with everyone you meet. If you\u2019re not, at least, adding LinkedIn connections for every panelist you meet on a webinar, what are you even doing?<\/span><\/p>\n

No. 5: Listening Party<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe you\u2019re showing off your audio equipment? I could see that.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What takes hosting a webinar to the next level is when you have the most badass audio equipment on the planet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you think your rig is underwhelming, you can fix that!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grab a <\/span>Shure<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>Blue<\/span><\/a> microphone<\/span><\/a>, and add an <\/span>audio mixer<\/span><\/a> to the mix, even if you don\u2019t need one \u2014 and <\/span>people will start mistaking you for Rick Rubin<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And if your audio setup is sort of <\/span>toothless<\/span><\/a> these days, the holidays are coming up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now you know just what to ask for.<\/span><\/p>\n

BONUS ITEM \u2014 No. 6: Linkbacks!<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the best things about hosting legal tech panels is that you get (usually, multiple) linkbacks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are linkbacks? Basically, links to your website appearing at another website.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why are those important? Because, linkbacks are something that Google and other search engines use to establish your domain authority.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What does that mean? Well, it means that the search engine believes that you know what you\u2019re talking about, and will offer you up as a resource for relevant searches, higher up in the search results.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And if you can get linkbacks from quality sources: like legal publishers, and legal tech companies \u2014 that\u2019s pretty sweet, too. Also, those links tend to be evergreen.<\/span><\/p>\n

BONUS ITEM \u2014 No. 7: Great Content!<\/b>\u00a0And, of course: We\u2019re just over here creating exceptional content for attorneys! Who doesn\u2019t love that?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(<\/span>Probably children<\/span><\/a> \u2014 but, whatever: They don\u2019t have any money.)<\/span><\/p>\n
