{"id":5708,"date":"2018-11-15T15:25:24","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T20:25:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gutenberg-atl.staging.breakingmedia.com\/legal-innovation-center\/?p=5708"},"modified":"2019-02-19T11:31:08","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T16:31:08","slug":"evolve-the-law-podcast-marty-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/legal-innovation-center\/2018\/11\/15\/evolve-the-law-podcast-marty-smith\/","title":{"rendered":"Evolve the Law Podcast:  Marty Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/marty-smith-b3aa19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marty Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is probably the most interesting and influential legal innovator you\u2019ve never heard of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A premed student who discovered he was afraid of blood, Marty made the shift to legal, and initially environmental law, rather late in his undergrad studies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Starting his legal career at the law firm of Bill Gates Sr (father of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Jr.) Marty had an early opportunity to join (what would then have been considered) a fledgling Microsoft as one of it\u2019s earliest lawyers but was persuaded by Gates Sr. to stay at the firm. Innovation was never far as Smith was later very early to the eDiscovery market, incubating an eDiscovery company at the law firm before helping the firm to divest itself of it and, ultimately, sell it years later.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5792\" src=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Marty-Smith.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/legal-innovation-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Marty-Smith.jpg 264w, https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/legal-innovation-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Marty-Smith-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More recently, Marty has been one of the driving forces behind the ABA Center for Innovation.
