{"id":6054,"date":"2018-12-11T11:00:37","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T16:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gutenberg-atl.staging.breakingmedia.com\/legal-innovation-center\/?p=6054"},"modified":"2018-12-11T09:48:08","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T14:48:08","slug":"emerging-legal-departments-roundtable-legal-tech-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/legal-innovation-center\/2018\/12\/11\/emerging-legal-departments-roundtable-legal-tech-101\/","title":{"rendered":"Emerging Legal Departments Roundtable: Legal Tech 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On December 5, Evolve the Law, Above the Law\u2019s Legal Innovation Center (ETL), held its inaugural roundtable, \u201cEmerging Legal Departments: Legal Tech 101,\u201d at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2oHcwrk\">Logikcull\u2019s<\/a> San Francisco headquarters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ybxfuA\">Monica Zent<\/a>, Founder of the innovative alternative legal solutions provider, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JBY0h4\">ZentLaw<\/a> &amp; Founder and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HSyC12\">Foxwordy<\/a>, the patented AI-powered collaboration platform for the legal industry and Stephanie Corey, Co-Founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2oWF8w6\">UpLevel Ops<\/a>, a legal strategy and operations consulting firm and Co-Founder of the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cloc.org\/\">CLOC<\/a>), led the discussion. Power<\/li>\n<li>Paul Porrini, General Counsel at Smartsheet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cI was so honored to co-lead this productive panel discussion with amazing legal industry leaders,&#8221; said Zent. &#8220;The different perspectives that each panelist brought to the table allowed us to uncover practical, real-world solutions for our audience. The composition of our audience was also great in terms of a mixture of accomplished General Counsel and Legal Operations leaders taking part in the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some key takeaways from the discussion include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legal ops is now front and center for even the newest of legal departments. Forward thinking GCs are looking to streamline and automate wherever they can for scalability.<\/li>\n<li>Smaller legal departments focus on enabling revenue first, cutting spend second, so anything legal ops can do to streamline the revenue-generating process is a must.<\/li>\n<li>Automation of legal intake and enhancements in contracting are particularly hot topics.<\/li>\n<li>Panelists recommended that corporate legal departments, \u201cStart with what they\u2019ve got,\u201d in terms of technology and leveraging resources from other departments.<\/li>\n<li>Insurance carriers may provide discounts for companies that implement cyber training and new technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cLegal Departments are no longer waiting until things are messy before they implement proper processes and technologies. They want things clean out of the gate, and these smaller departments need to scale. They don\u2019t have the bodies to throw at the work like larger departments,\u201d said Corey.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the success of this event, ETL, Monica and Stephanie will be hosting a similar panel discussion and roundtable in the South Bay in the early spring.
