Lawyerly Lairs: A Cadwalader Castle in the Sky

Partners at high-powered Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, where profits per partner in 2010 clocked in at almost $2.4 million, appreciate the finer things in life. Thankfully there are some CWT partners who are kicking it old school. They live in exclusive prewar coops on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Let's look at the Lawyerly Lair that a senior Cadwalader lawyer recently acquired -- on Park Avenue, one of the world's legendary thoroughfares -- for just a shade under $6 million....

Here’s the floorplan. Notice how the amazing wraparound terrace nuzzles up against practically all the major living spaces of the apartment.

On the whole, the apartment is laid out well. I prefer this floor plan over that of Stephen Madsen’s Cravath Crib (which I described as “a dense warren of separate rooms, as opposed to gracious spaces that flow into each other”).

Finally, here’s the listing. The monthly maintenance charges, at $5,445, are larger than most people’s mortgages. But considering that Jonathan and Candice Wainwright got such a good deal on this place — an $850,000 markdown from the original listing price of $6,750,000 — they should have money to spare, right?

STREETEASY — 1112 PARK AVENUE #PHB

This is a remarkably stunning and sophisticated penthouse situated at the top of a highly sought after white glove prewar cooperative building in the epicenter of Carnegie Hill. An enormous established planted terrace wraps around the entire exterior and offers endless views in all directions, including Central Park and the Reservoir. The terrace can be accessed from all of the primary rooms, and it is configured as a series of individualized spaces for outdoor enjoyment, including everyday living, dining and entertaining.

Entrance into the apartment is from a private elevator landing which opens to a large central gallery leading to the living room with wood burning fireplace. One side of the living room has oversized solarium windows looking onto the terrace, with the conservatory-like library on the other. There is also a formal dining room, and the large chef’s kitchen features a breakfast room that extends onto the terrace. The master bedroom has a bathroom en suite, while the second bedroom has a bathroom adjacent, making it ideal for guests. A staff room and staff bathroom are located off the kitchen, and there is a washer/dryer. The apartment, which is in excellent condition, includes an abundance of prewar details, including hardwood floors and high ceilings, and is wired for sound throughout. It is truly one-of-a-kind, a unique home that epitomizes the glamour and drama associated with a Manhattan penthouse.
