The popular narrative would have us believe that the supposed traits of this millennial generation — the shrunken attention spans, the tendency to hop from job to job, the desire for “meaningful work,” etc. — is confounding their employers. We wondered whether and/or how this generational tension is playing out in the specific context of U.S. law firms. So we recently fielded, in partnership with our friends at Major Lindsey & Africa, a series of surveys looking for insight into the young associate’s views on transparency, work/life balance, the recent pay hikes, and many more topics.
We’ve pulled together all the data and today make available a report summarizing our findings. Certainly, we found that real tensions exist. Yet millennial attorneys often defy generational stereotypes in their career goals and workplace priorities. Our report is chock-full of data and insight into such questions as “Who really wants to be a partner?”, “Who cares about diversity?”, and “Is it okay to represent Big Tobacco?”
