US News Rank
What do these ratings mean?
The ATL School and Firm Insiders Survey asks self-identified current students, alumni, and practicing lawyers to rate major aspects of life at their law school (academics, social life, clinical training, career services, financial aid advising) and/or law firm (compensation, hours, morale, culture, training). We then translate these ratings into letter grades, where the mean score for each particular ratings category is the equivalent of a “B.”
We require a minimum threshold of responses for each institution before we publish any survey-based ratings content. Using a standard formula for statistical validity, we adhere to a threshold that gives us an 85% confidence level and a 10% margin of error. The precise threshold number will of course vary depending on the size of the individual institution. For example, for a law firm of 1,000 attorneys, we would require 50 responses in order to publish ratings for the firm.

Insider Reviews
from students and alumni of Hamline University School of Law
I was in the weekend program (one of two in the country, with Cooley Law being the other). I loved the program, but I wish there were more dedicated services available to the weekend students.

Do not go to Hamline if you are not planning to practice in the region. It is not a recognized school outside of the midwest. In Minnesota, despite being lower tier, it is fairly well respected. As with any lower tier school though, “buyer beware” – certainly don’t expect BigLaw unless you are in the top 5%. Also, the Twin Cities is heavily saturated with attorneys and well educated people generally, so the job market is very tight. There are four law schools within a 5 mile radius of each other. As someone who has frequent interaction with law students across the nation, I can verify that the quality of legal education that I received at Hamline is on par with higher tier schools, even the highest tier schools, but obviously this doesn’t matter when there are too many attorneys in the area, with too few positions available.
Alumni
The legal education will be sufficient for you to get out and work. Otherwise, you’re on your own when it comes to finding work. Also, read “Failing Law Schools” by Brian Z. Tamanaha. Be advised that your tuition money will go to support third tier law professors crank out articles and enjoy a life style you will likely never be able to enjoy until many years after graduation (assuming you survive financially the first few years out of law school).
Alumni
Hamline gives you a quality education and has a greater “community” feel than the other law schools in town. It has a weekend program for people working full-time during law school, and you can switch between them from semester to semester, or combine the two. However, you should note that Hamline is not well-known outside of Minnesota and the Dakotas, so finding a first job elsewhere could be especially difficult. In the Twin Cities, the U of M is considered much more prestigious and then Hamline jockeys with St. Thomas and William Mitchell down in the rankings.
