Not The Sexiest Invention, But An Important One

America's legacy of ingenuity got off to a dry beginning.

Answer: Potash. Technically the patent covers the production of pearl ash too, but Potash was really America’s first industrial chemical. Its name came from the process of soaking plant ash in pots to produce an alkaline compound they called POTassium carbonate.
