Seattle Legal Tech MeetUp And Evolve The Law Collaborate To Show Off Seattle’s Deep Legal Tech Bench

With two demo nights, more than a half-dozen meetings, and more than 600 members, the Seattle Legal Tech MeetUp continues to demonstrate that Seattle punches well above its weight in the legal tech innovations it brings to the world.

On October 10th, Evolve the Law will partner with the Seattle Legal Tech MeetUp to give Seattle Legal Tech innovators a platform to show off the cool technologies they are building. With two demo nights, more than a half-dozen meetings, and more than 600 members, the Seattle Legal Tech MeetUp continues to demonstrate that Seattle punches well above its weight in the legal tech innovations it brings to the world.

With that in mind, we’re pleased to profile each of the presenters at the upcoming demo night on October 10th in Seattle:

ActiveWords: ActiveWords is a pure Windows productivity tool, used by lawyers around the world. It allows the customer to “name shortcuts” which are then executed by typing/inking or clicking. Those shortcuts are the things we do all the time, i.e. Text Expansion, Launch Apps, Navigate to Websites, open documents, files, files, folders or drives. ActiveWords 4.0 will be “shipping” hopefully before the end of year 2018. A prior version, ActiveWords 3.0, was reviewed by Debbie Foster here in the American Bar Association Journal. ActiveWords was built by a team including Buzz Bruggeman, a Duke Law grad, former real estate lawyer/litigator.

basiccounsel.com: Basic Counsel is an e-commerce marketplace to showcase and sell what lawyers do. Lawyers sell legal services at varying scopes and price-points. The scope of work and cost is pre-defined and stated up-front. Similar to how a consumer would browse and select a product on Amazon, they can browse through legal services on Basic Counsel. Consumers pick the package that’s right for them. The transaction is handled entirely through Basic Counsel’s simple to use platform. Basic Counsel allows the consumer to engage in meaningful comparison shopping for legal services, reduces marketing time and budgets for lawyers, and improves communication about what lawyers do for everyone.

inForm Legal Tech: inForm Legal Tech is an early stage company creating easily customizable document assembly software for Washington state pro bono programs, consumers, and law firms. Our first products automate pleadings for landlord tenant disputes as well as small claims cases and judgment collections. inForm was founded by a lawyer and a paralegal who have spent their careers in legal aid and want to use technology to democratize the way we access the law. We plan to offer a sliding payment scale for our products and use a portion of our profits to support our creation of specialized technology for pro bono programs.

JDivorce.com: Divorce papers can now be prepared using JDivorce, a web-based, free, document assembly tool. JDivorce provides a do-it-yourself solution to clients for divorce paperwork. Its larger purpose is to establish a legal services marketplace made frictionless using advanced technology and AI. For example, any lawyers can setup a free profile and begin receiving cases. JDivorce is public and used by nearly 40 people every day.

Off The Record: Off The Record is an app that fights your traffic tickets. Drivers simply take a photo of the ticket, answer a few questions, and OTR does the rest. OTR intelligently matches each ticket to the local attorney most likely to beat it. OTR is so confident in its algorithm that it offers a full refund if the ticket doesn’t stay off the driver’s record. But with a 97% success rate, who needs a money back guarantee.

Off The Record has partnered with hundreds of attorneys and is available in California, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Washington, and a dozen other states. It continues to expand each month and is always on the lookout for great traffic attorneys.

Text A Lawyer: Text A Lawyer is the world’s fastest way to hire a lawyer, period. We simplify the process of contacting and hiring a lawyer. Pick a state, legal category, enter a question, and automatically connect to the highest-rated available lawyer. Ask only as many questions as you have, then disconnect and your attorney-client relationship is severed. Get a transcript to your email to reference. Pricing is $20 for the first chat/question and $9 for each follow-up question. Text A Lawyer doesn’t replace the traditional practice of law, but acts as an “access to justice” bridge for people who can’t obtain timely legal advice when needed.

Pretty cool, right? RSVP here and see this innovative tech in person on October 10th.

Finally, Seattle Legal Tech has other upcoming events.

  • On November 7th for “Supersized Small Firm: using tech and process to outmaneuver bigger firms.” RSVP for that one here.
  • And coming soon Seattle Legal Tech will host its third ever CLE. Date is still TBD but the content itself will come from the community. Pitch your CLE idea here. Curious about what to pitch? Check out the roster for 2016 here or 2017 here.
