Biglaw Partner Named Special Counsel In Russia Investigation
Yuge news.
Big news. Yuge. In a letter obtained by CNN, the Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to shepherd the investigation into the possible interference by Russia into the 2016 presidential election.
Mueller has a sterling reputation in law enforcement. He led the FBI for 12 years and has previous public service including as United States Attorney for the Northern District of California and acting United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. He’s been appointed by both Republican and Democratic presidents for those positions.

Prior to his appointment as special counsel, Mueller was a partner at WilmerHale. He has now resigned from the firm to focus on the investigation. Which, given the firm’s representation of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, is probably for the best. While at the firm his practice focused on investigations, crisis management, privacy and, perhaps most importantly for this particular assignment, cybersecurity work.
