Can a Biglaw Partner Fix the Big Old Mess... of Detroit?

Who is the prominent Biglaw bankruptcy lawyer just named to take over the ailing city of Detroit?

The following is from Michelle Olsen of Appellate Daily:

I enjoyed David’s article about Kevyn Orr and Detroit!

A few comments about Kevyn. I know him from Jones Day. He is really nice, a great guy. One of the nicest partners in the firm — and nicest people period.

There was a firm service day where we helped fix up a school in DC, I think on a Saturday. I was on a three-person outdoor painting team with him and a summer associate. He was so nice to us. He made conversation, asked us our favorite movies, etc. He also provided some tunes, with an assist from his black Porsche SUV. He opened up the back hatch and blasted the music so we could hear it while we painted. That thing must have had an amazing battery, because I think we painted for a couple of hours (pic at right).

A partner who shows up to volunteer on a Saturday and treats his team members as equals (and actually went out of his way to make it fun)? Whenever I saw him around the office after that, he always made a point to say hello and be friendly.

Not only was he nice to the “regular” folk like me, but the firm leadership respected him, as well. The whole time I was at the firm, Kevyn was in a leadership position. I think when I left, he was the administrative partner in the DC office (the #2 post after partner-in-charge). I see from Jones Day’s press release on Kevyn’s appointment that he had been named the new partner-in-charge of the Miami office (not yet opened, I think).

One final bit of trivia: His wife is a doctor.
