What The Hell Is Perkins Coie Doing?

They can't announce raises because they're "nuanced"?!? What does that mean?

Woman looking at dollar signThe last time we checked in on Perkins Coie, they’d helped kick off a much-needed salary war in the Northwest. So when raises came rolling through the major markets, one might have expected Perkins Coie to be — well, if not “ready” then at least “unsurprised.”

And yet the firm seems as flat-footed as Dick Cheney on draft day.

Perkins Coie gets voicemail from managing partner. Some offices getting raises, but absolutely no detail because we’re more “nuanced” than other firms. Said that each office will have a meeting with their office managing partners next week. Doing their best to avoid Above The Law shaming by hiding information and only disseminating things locally.

As a fan of the word “nuance,” it’s a shame to see it coopted to mean “cheap.”

Perkins Coie remains the top Am Law 100 firm that hasn’t announced a salary adjustment, clocking in at 42nd this year and boasting a PPP of $1.10 million. However, averages can be deceiving… Perkins Coie’s partnership is noted for a whopping 23 to 1 differential, as of 2014, between the most compensated and least compensated partners. So there’s a lot of relatively cash-strapped partners out there who may not be eager to hand over their earnings in new raises.

In any event, we should be hearing Perkins Coie’s plan in the coming days. We’ll pass it along as soon as we see it…
