Biglaw Partner From Key Swing State Gets Trump Admin Position

Another firm gets a seat in the Trump inner circle.

James F. Schultz

Another Biglaw partner has nabbed a position in the Trump administration. No, it isn’t someone else from Jones Day (the firm has pulled down a healthy number of positions in the new administration), but it is an early supporter of Donald Trump from the key swing state of Pennsylvania.

James D. Schultz, chair of Cozen O’Connor’s Government Law and Regulatory Affairs practice group, has been tapped as Associate White House Counsel and Special Assistant to the President. This isn’t an unexpected turn for Schultz, as he’s previously served as General Counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As Cozen’s press release notes:

An early supporter of President Trump, Schultz, a veteran of Pennsylvania politics, assisted on President Trump’s successful primary campaign effort in the Keystone State. Later, Schultz played a key role at the Republican National Convention, offering critical advice and assistance on floor operations as well as to the platform and rules committees. After the November election, Schultz was appointed as legal counsel to the president-elect’s transition team.

Schultz has deep roots in the Keystone state (remember the state was key to Trump’s electoral victory), as he received his J.D. from Widener University School of Law, and his B.A. from Temple University. The firm seems proud to have landed a place in the Trump team:

“It’s no surprise that the President has called Jim back to public service,” said Michael J. Heller, President and CEO of Cozen O’Connor. “Serving in the office of White House Counsel is an extremely prestigious honor. We are very proud of Jim and his appointment to serve in that office. Jim has had a distinguished record of achievement in both the public and private sectors. As General Counsel to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Jim served the citizens of Pennsylvania well and I know he will be a tremendous asset to the President’s legal team and our country.”

Wonder if prospective summer associates will be as thrilled.
