Kristin Babik

Earlier today, we reported that a solo practitioner had been killed in Las Vegas mass shooting at the hands of Stephen Paddock. We’ve now learned that a law student was seriously wounded when Paddock decided to begin raining gunfire upon the crowd at the Harvest 91 Festival.

Kristin Babik, a third-year student at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, was enjoying Jason Aldean’s concert when she was wounded. She suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs, and thankfully had no injuries to her other major organs or her spine. In an email to the Florida Law community, Dean Laura Ann Rosenbury said, “Kristin is on bed rest now, and she is thankful for our thoughts and prayers.”

According to Babik’s LinkedIn profile, this past summer, she served as an intern at the Clark County District Attorney’s Office. During the fall semester, she worked as a judicial extern for Judge James P. Nilon of Florida’s Eighth Judicial Circuit Court, where he serves as administrative judge of its family court. In the summer of 2016, she was a legal extern with the special victims counsel of the U.S. Army JAG Corps. She volunteered at Florida Legal Services during her first year of law school.

Dean Rosenbury reports that a GoFundMe account has been set up in Babik’s honor:

Babik’s friends report that while she’s in stable condition, she’s in a lot of pain. She will have to recuperate in Las Vegas and will miss a lot of school. If you would like to to help with Babik’s medical costs, please click here donate to this worthy cause.
