U.K. Firm Scoops Up Entire Office Of Beleaguered Biglaw Shop

What is going on at this firm?

We told you last week that something is up at Sedgwick. They are losing partners and senior attorneys left and right. A handful to Drinker Biddle, a few to Robinson & Cole, a couple to Mintz Levin — the list is extensive. One firm that has repeatedly fed off of Sedgwick lawyers is U.K. firm Kennedys.

Bolstered by an 8 percent increase in gross revenue over the previous year, Kennedys has been growing as rapidly as Mark McGwire in 1992. Besides taking office managing partners (along with other lawyers) from the New York and Chicago offices of Sedgwick, they’ve also used mergers and a few Mayer Brown attorneys to boost their numbers. Now, as reported by Law.com, comes word that they’re taking on the entirety of Sedgwick affiliate, Bermuda-based Sedgwick Chudleigh Ltd.:

“This arrangement provides us with the opportunity to service clients in Bermuda, the [U.S.] and the U.K., as well as our numerous other locations globally. It significantly augments our global insurance practice and puts us in a class of one amongst insurance law firms,” said a statement by Kennedys senior partner Nick Thomas.

So, what’s really going on at Sedgwick? Is the firm prepping for a merger? Or is something more ominous on the horizon?
