The Harvard LLM Community: More Vicious Than the Cafeteria in 'Mean Girls'

Remember this flyer, for the recent “International Party” sponsored by LLM students at Harvard Law School?

Some of you, in the comments to our post, made some disparaging remarks about the English-speaking abilities of Asian LLM students.
But as it turns out, this flyer wasn’t written by the Asians. And many of them found it highly offensive.
For those of you who are curious, we provide the backstory — including an earlier version of the party flyer — after the jump.

We love nothing more than a good tempest in a teapot. Here’s what happened, according to an HLS source.

“The European LLM students commandeered the ‘international party.’ They sent out a flyer saying fun things about themselves, and they didn’t invite the Asian student organizations to co-sponsor. Here’s the first flyer they circulated.”

“The flyer was completely Eurocentric (except for that dreadful line about the ‘African rhythm’). So some of the Asians gave the Euros a piece of their mind in private. The Euros don’t think it’s a big deal, but to make a point, they send out the flyer below.”

“This flyer offends the living daylights out of all the Asians (and pisses off the Africans, too). But Asians being Asians, they just smile, and assume the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The Indians thought the reference to a common religion with Pakistan was weird as hell. The Europeans smile back, thinking they did the Asians a favor.”

When we were in law school, the LLMs weren’t much of a presence. They were quiet in class, smiled a lot, and basically did their own thing.
But the LLMs up at Harvard appear to be WAY more interesting. And vicious, too.
P.S. A plea from our source:

“Please clarify that the Asian LLMs don’t speak poor English, as some of your commenters suggest. These Asians from Asia are looking for jobs right now, and many of them run circles around the Europeans in the literature and philosophy departments.”

“The Asians didn’t make these announcements, so they shouldn’t be blamed for them. And no one realizes that some of the European LLMs speak horrible English, too.”

(Ah, but they have European accents. And everyone is a sucker for a European accent….)
