On-Campus Interviewing at UVA: Hunton In, Cravath Out

Earlier this week, we reported that Hunton & Williams wasn’t on the list of firms conducting on-campus interviews — or, to be technical, “on-grounds interviewing” (OGI) — at UVA Law School. That appears to have changed. From an email sent out yesterday afternoon by UVA Law’s office of career services:

[A] number of employers have signed up for OGI just this week. We have provided a list below. If you prepared your rankings previously, you may want to consider working these employers into your schedule. For example, contrary to what was reported on AbovetheLaw.com, Hunton & Williams is, in fact, interviewing during the OGI process and has been added to the system as of this afternoon.

The wording of the memo is misleading to the extent that it implies our original report was not correct at the time it was published. We have confirmed with UVA’s career services office that Hunton & Williams signed up for OGI after our original post went up.
Of course, that’s just a matter of chronology, not causation. But some readers think we might have played a role. From one law student tipster (representative of about half a dozen who expressed the same sentiment):

Apparently the ATL shaming was enough — Hunton and Williams now has a
bid page for UVA OGI.

More discussion, including the full UVA career services memo, after the jump.

Says a second UVA Law source, on the Hunton & Williams return to OGI:

If it’s true (that you all caused it… post hoc ergo proptor hoc [who needs law school when you can watch West Wing?] and all that), then major thanks / props. Making info public is a great service!

We agree that disseminating information is a form of public service. But don’t get that excited about Hunton coming to Charlottesville. Just because they’re doing on-campus interviews doesn’t mean they have to do any callbacks — this could just be a charade.
Meanwhile, some law firms have pulled out of OGI at the last minute. We hear that Cravath — which just started a voluntary deferral program for the class of 2009, and deferred the class of 2010 by a year — won’t be coming to Charlottesville this year.
(Of course, this doesn’t preclude UVA 2Ls from applying to Cravath directly. If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain.)
Good luck, UVA rising 2Ls. You may attend America’s coolest law school, but that doesn’t guarantee you a job.
Update (11:45 AM): From a source at NYU Law School:

Hunton & Williams also dropped out of OCI at NYU a few weeks back. However, they timed it so that they dropped out after we had to put our bids in, so if you bid for them, you lost a spot that you can’t get back to use on another firm. Thanks, Hunton.

UVA LAW SCHOOL CAREER SERVICES — MEMORANDUM — NEWLY ADDED EMPLOYERS FOR OGI
From: UVA Law School Career Services
Date: Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 3:38 PM
Subject: Additional Symplicity Information and Extended Deadline for Ranking Submission
We wanted to send you a few last-minute tips on your Symplicity rankings and process. In addition, for the reasons discussed below, we have decided to extend the ranking deadline 72 hours, until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2009. We hope that this will help you to complete the process to your satisfaction.
First, as you may be aware, there are some employers who are changing their OGI plans. We are updating the system as soon as we get this information. If you ranked a firm that has now canceled, you will have a blank in that rating spot. As a result, you may want to check your lists one last time as you may have an opportunity to add another firm or two.
Second, a number of employers have signed up for OGI just this week. We have provided a list below. If you prepared your rankings previously, you may want to consider working these employers into your schedule. For example, contrary to what was reported on AbovetheLaw.com, Hunton & Williams is, in fact, interviewing during the OGI process and has been added to the system as of this afternoon.
Third, because of the way that Symplicity was set up, it is not possible to send cover letters or writing samples with your August OGI bids. We will be telling all of the employers that this technical issue was the reason that writing samples were not posted, but that students will be bringing writing samples to the interviews.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.
