Earlier this week, we solicited funny captions for this photo (a great image for the July 4th weekend, given all the American flags):
You responded with around 70 comments. This was a smaller-than-usual number of nominees, but they were of high quality. There were about 25 or so that we saw as worthy contenders. Alas, to make the contest workable, we winnowed the entries down to a shortlist of eight.
Check them out and vote — warning: some crude / juvenile humor ahead (if you can’t handle it, stop reading now) — after the jump.
This time around, we did things a little differently. First, we used a photo that most of you recognized: a picture of David Boies and Ted Olson, who faced off against each other in Bush v. Gore but are now working together in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, a challenge to Proposition 8′s ban on gay marriage in California.
Second, we decided to let you pick the finalists. We selected the top eight entries based on how many “likes” they received from readers. This approach yielded finalists that we happened to like as well. But here are four honorable mentions (captions we appreciated that didn’t make your cut):
“Olson couldn’t help himself after suddenly realizing that his full name, Theodore, is actually pretty f**king gay.”
“If all goes as planned, I can make an honest man of you.”
“The Bush v. Gore result in alternative dispute resolution.”
“Of course I’ll accept this rose.”
Now, on to your finalists. To make the cut, a comment needed eight “likes” (fittingly enough, for a picture related to the Prop 8 case). Here are the eight finalists:
A. “I’ll just prop my 8″ right here.”
B. “No, I said I wanted you to take a picture of the couple of FLAGS back there.”
C. “Why can’t I quit you, Ted.”
D. “Shhhh. It’s okay. They can’t make us tell.”
E. “Just between you and me, those f@gs make me want to puke my f*cking guts out.”
[Note: Please don't be offended by the use of the two "f" words; it's a movie reference.]
F. “And when Ted took off his glasses, and let down his hair, I also realized that he was beautiful…”
– David Boies
G. “It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault.”
H. I didn’t even know Janet Reno and Kagan were dating!
Now, time to vote. We’ll keep the polls open through the holiday weekend; they’ll close on Monday, July 5, at 11:59 PM.
