When Jones Day Laid Off a D.C. Employee, It Discovered a Surprise in his Desk

Firing people sucks. The fired feel lousy about themselves. Those doing the firing feel like jerks. The day the ax falls is a dark one for everybody.

But it’s darkest for the ones who lose their jobs. Especially if they have to leave the building immediately. And don’t have time to clear out their desks. And have things in their desk that will result in at least 15 years of prison time.

Back in June, Jones Day confirmed that it had laid off staff in Dallas and Los Angeles. A recent press release from the FBI suggests that the firm had layoffs in D.C., too. The firm did not mention this back in June, perhaps because it did not want to have to relate the disturbing story of what was found in the desk drawer of one of their recently-axed employees…

We understand that Ernesto Cacanindin used to work in Jones Day’s D.C. office, where he was known as “Ernie in Financial.” He was let go from the firm in May, and when HR cleaned out his desk, they found some disgusting material. From the Department of Justice:

According to Cacanindin’s plea agreement, the FBI was notified on May 12, 2010 that pictures containing child pornography were found in Cacanindin’s workspace at a law firm in the District of Columbia where Cacanindin had been terminated from employment.

Employees had discovered an envelope containing 20 Polaroid pictures while cleaning out Cacanindin’s desk following his dismissal. Nine of those pictures depicted closeup views of a female child’s genitalia, and five pictures showed Cacanindin performing oral sex on the victim. The victim was between 12 and 15 years old at the time the pictures were taken. Cacanindin admitted that he performed and photographed the sexual acts at his home, five or six years ago.

We reached out to the firm for comment, but did not hear back. Cacanindin has pleaded guilty and faces 15 to 30 years in prison. According to the Washington Post, he acknowledged performing and recording the sexual acts at his home, five to six years ago.
