Lawyerly Lairs: A Cadwalader Castle in the Sky

Partners at high-powered Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, where profits per partner in 2010 clocked in at almost $2.4 million, appreciate the finer things in life. Thankfully there are some CWT partners who are kicking it old school. They live in exclusive prewar coops on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Let's look at the Lawyerly Lair that a senior Cadwalader lawyer recently acquired -- on Park Avenue, one of the world's legendary thoroughfares -- for just a shade under $6 million....

From the Observer:

The home was purchased by Jonathan and Candice Wainwright, who paid $5.9 million, according to city records. Mr. Wainwright is a senior [counsel] at Cadwalder and his son [Jonathan Wainwright Jr. aka Jay Wainwright] happens to be the founder of Cosi, the office worker-clogged sandwich shops. Life is delicious indeed.

As delicious as a Cosi signature salad (i.e., insanely delicious for 600 calories). But it seems that Jay Wainwright, who founded Cosi with his brother Shep Wainwright, is no longer running the company. He was forced out of Cosi a few years ago, receiving severance of less than $54,000 (which seems like modest dough considering the ubiquitousness of the high-end sandwich chain).

His father’s professional perch seems more secure. Jonathan Wainwright Sr. has been with Cadwalader since 1968; he used to be a partner and now serves as senior counsel. As noted in his CWT bio, “[h]e serves on the board of directors of the managers of several large hedge funds, as well as numerous closely-held U.S. companies and foreign corporations.” Nice work if you can get it.

Based on Jay Wainwright’s New York Times wedding announcement, it seems that the Wainwrights are Episcopalian. That’s nice and WASPy, as is Jonathan Wainwright’s undergraduate alma mater, Yale College.

Okay, back to the real estate. Let’s learn more about the Wainwrights’ new home — photos, a floor plan, the juicy details of the listing….
