Bar Review Diaries: Boredom, Procrastination, and Poor Penmanship

In the latest installment of the Bar Review Diaries, studying is starting to get a bit tedious. How do our columnists keep themselves entertained?

Here we go:

Dear Diary,

Well, the first official week of bar study is in the books. Just a little over seven weeks to go. Now it’s been almost three years since I was member of the real world, but from what I can remember, seven weeks is generally considered a pretty significant stretch of time. Three years ago, if someone would have said to me, “Andrew, you have two months to prepare for an exam that close to 90 percent of all test takers pass on their first try,” I would have said, “Get back to me in a month.”

God, I miss college.

But we’re not in Kansas anymore, are we Dorothy? No, instead, I find myself in Bar Exam Land (the slightly more demented cousin of the Land of Law School). And in Bar Exam Land, I, like many of my fellow bar studiers, am already amidst what I can only assume is a grand social experiment, designed to determine just how many explanatory videos a person can watch before they go absolutely batshit crazy. (And that’s coming from someone who is watching the excellent, well-paced, well-organized, and absolutely stunningly shot Themis cinematic achievements. Speaking of, if Real Property Professor Zachary Kramer’s water cup isn’t nominated for an Oscar, I would consider its omission akin to Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan.)

You see, what I’m beginning to realize about studying for the bar exam is that it’s hard not because of all the material you have to learn. Although, admittedly, there have been a few times when I found myself questioning this assertion. (For example, when I found out I was responsible for knowing the Rule in Shelley’s Case… which, as we know, is an archaic, little-used rule that, oh by the way, appears to have been ABOLISHED IN EVERY SINGLE STATE.)

No, as it turns out, studying for the bar exam is hard because it’s pretty damn boring. (Not Shakespeare in Love boring, but close.) You wake up. You watch seven or eight videos about a topic of law. You answer some review questions. And then you wake up and do it all over again. At least I have Commercial Paper still to go. If anything can be exciting, my money is on her.

(Note: This diary entry has been brought to you by #firstworldproblems.)

It’s tough out there in the school of hard knocks bar studying. But have faith, and keep up the good work, folks. We will check in with our diarists again next week.
