Above the Law Goes to Trial -- Dispatch from Apple v. Samsung

Chris Danzig attended the Apple v. Samsung trial yesterday. What happened?

Here are some random other highlights from yesterday:

– Sometime after lunch, Charles Verhoeven called Susan Kare “Sir” by mistake. He giggled, then apologized, and said it had been a long day. Despite the tenseness of the situation, Kare took the comment in stride. I’m sure she agreed about the long day part, at least.

– After one of several quibbles about the admissibility of some evidence, the reporter sitting next to me gave a fist pump and whispered “Woo!” when Judge Koh charged both parties time for their admissibility objection quibbling. Judge Koh is pretty awesome to watch. Both Apple and Samsung frequently drag details out as long as possible, and personify, perhaps to a fault, the adversarial nature of our legal system. Koh bounces between sweetness, sarcasm, and razor fangs adeptly.

– There were several bizarre instances of the army of attorneys scuttling around, making sure they were handling the right phones. All the phones look so similar, and apparently the wrong ones had been used previously. At one point, a young associate had to explain why the exhibit stickers had been taken off of some of the phones. There was an awkward discussion about trying to peel the sticky stuff off the cases. Where was Samuel Beckett when you need him?

We’ll continue to cover the trial, and if I’m lucky, I’ll take another field trip later this month.
