How To Get A Competitive Edge On The Bar Exam

Worried about the bar exam? Let Marino Legal Academy help you learn how to score points with the law you know.

Ed. note: This post comes to us from Professor Joseph Marino, Executive Director of Marino Legal Academy.

I have never met a student that failed the bar exam because they did not know enough law. They failed because they could not score points with the law they knew.

JFK, Jr. failed the bar exam twice with other bar courses, receiving MBE scores of 117 and 118 (scaled), before skyrocketing to a 167 score after some one-on-one time with a trained Marino Tutor and having learned my MBE method.

In the last few weeks of your bar studies, you should focus on how to score points. I call this the “memory and exam performance” part of bar review. Exam Performance Training is learning how to score points. Marino Legal Academy has several well-tested tools to boost your ability to score points on the bar exam…

Memory Boosters™
Memory is a function of repetition of the same rules over and over. At this stage, you need to memorize the important rules. You should have a document that is manageable and has the rules in an easy to memorize format. You need to go over several subjects a day and go over all the subjects two or three times before the exam. My “Memory BoostersTM,” which contains all the rules you need to know in 15 to 20 pages, are helpful tools for your last two weeks of study. You should try to devote 8 to 10 hours a day to studying with half the day memorizing law and the other half practicing scoring points.

Essay Workshops
Essays are graded on a predetermined scale. The key is not learning just how to write a good essay, but about giving the bar examiners what is on the grader’s outline. Each day you must write an essay to completion under exam conditions. Most essay writing instruction is flawed. You learn how to write when you know the law being questioned, but on the bar exam you also need to know how to score points when you are not familiar with the law being tested. Essays are an opportunity to score points and my Essay Writing Workshop is an efficient way to learn a method that will help you maximize your points on this section of the exam.

MPT Workshop
Multistate Performance Tests must also be written to completion. You should complete two a week. Many people do not recognize the points available from the MPT. If you have not yet conquered the format or the approach, my MPT Workshop will teach you the Marino MPT Method and help you get a high score.

MBE Workshop
Multistate Bar Examination questions should be practiced the same way you will take the actual test. One and a half hours of mixed questions should be done every day. Many people think the goal of practice is to train yourself to finish the test, but the real goal is to learn how to get questions correct. I have a 45/25/16 approach to conquering the MBE that includes how to choose between the two best answer choices to any particular question. It is about scoring more points. There is a short instructional lecture and 6 practice tests. Importantly, this workshop does not interfere with any bar review course you may be currently taking.

One-on-One Tutoring
Tutoring is one of the most time efficient and effective ways to prepare for the bar exam. Small tweaking of your knowledge and exam approaches can make a significant difference by helping you boost your ability to score points.

Having the ability to score points with the law he knew is what made the difference for JFK, Jr. It can also make the difference for you.

All of the above products are available through our Power Up! Program and are designed to get you scoring more points on the July 2014 Bar Exam.
