Criminal Justice Is Not An Omelette

A law school invites prosecutors for a frank discussion of wrongful convictions.

Don’t ever say in the war on crime, innocent people may be killed or incarcerated because that ain’t what our system is. It ain’t perfect but with that attitude it will never be worth anything.

Thomas Breen, a Chicago criminal defense lawyer and former prosecutor, speaking at a recent conference at Northwestern Law. The unique event brought prosecutors from Cook and Lake Counties together with the folks behind Northwestern’s Center on Wrongful Convictions to have a frank discussion about wrongful convictions and what prosecutorial offices are — or should be — doing about them. Kudos to Northwestern for hosting the event, which sounds like a step up from handing out Chick-fil-A while railing against gay marriage.
