Ed. note: This is the latest post by Above the Law’s guest conversationalist, Zach Abramowitz, of conversation platform ReplyAll. You can see some of his other conversations and musings here.
Last week, my partner and former accountant Ari Gold and I discussed which was worse: lawyering or accounting. In the course of the conversation, I pointed out that accountants never get the media attention that lawyers do. As evidence, I noted that the closest accountants have ever gotten to a TV show was Kevin, Oscar, and Angela’s corner on The Office, plus accountants don’t even have their own Above the Law. But then, in the ReplyAll version of a producer whispering in my ear, David Lat pointed out to me that there is, in fact, an ATL for accountants called Going Concern (of course it is) which, although started by Breaking Media, was later acquired by Sift Media.
It turns out that GC editor Caleb Newquist had actually read our lawyers vs. accountants conversation and written a follow-up post which referred to our conversation as a “pointless debate.” How dare he point out the truth! I thought it would be fun to have Caleb on ATL to continue the discussion of lawyers vs. accountants, find out a little more about GC, and get the lowdown on the current scuttlebutt in the accounting industry.
