Lawyer Becomes Fugitive From Justice

Lawyer facing upwards of six years in jail skipped out on sentencing and is now a fugitive.

Last week, a disgraced immigration attorney, found guilty on 13 felony theft counts back in December, skipped out on her sentencing hearing. Her lawyers expressed ignorance and Judge Andrew Hartman told a packed courtroom that the convicted lawyer, Emily Cohen, had aggressively delayed the inevitable throughout the case. He rescheduled the sentencing for Monday and promised to sentence her in absentia if she didn’t show. Word came later that Cohen was in a “medical facility,” whatever that means.

At the time, no one seemed concerned that Cohen was a flight risk — this was just another petty, symbolic rebuke of the system that convicted her. Even I quipped at the time, “You’d think she skipped the country except we know she sucks at immigration law.”

Prove us wrong, Emily. Prove us wrong.

Judge Hartman has now issued an arrest warrant for Cohen, after she skipped sentencing AGAIN — failing to show up for Monday’s hearing. Talk about chutzpah — or as an immigration lawyer who doesn’t understand immigration might say, “ballsy.”

Prosecutors were seeking six years for Cohen’s systematic fleecing of often confused immigrants, who paid the immigration attorney thousands of dollars to help them navigate the dense bureaucracy of legal immigration in this country and got nothing in return.

Here’s how Judge Hartman closed yesterday’s hearing:

Alright, listen up, people. Our fugitive has been on the run for ninety minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 4 miles-per-hour. That gives us a radius of six miles. What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive’s name is Emily Cohen. Go get her.
