Verdict Is In: Boston Marathon Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Verdicts.

A federal jury has convicted Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the college student who collaborated with his brother to bomb the finish line of the Boston Marathon, on the first count against him: Conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. That pretty much closes the book on this trial. While the jury dutifully reads out the other 29 verdicts, Tsarnaev has already been convicted on one of the 17 that carried the death penalty, and it’s hard to see how he could get off on anything else once the jury pegs him on that first count. UPDATE: He has indeed been found guilty on all 30 counts. See below.

As an offense eligible for the death penalty, the jury will now start the second phase of the trial to decide whether Tsarnaev gets life or death. UPDATE: Judge O’Toole says the penalty phase will start next week, but not necessarily on Monday.

We will update this post with a running tabulation of the subsequent verdicts.
