Law School Exam Website Crashes During Finals

Let the freakout commence as a law school loses the Internet during a web-based final exam.

We all wondered how a school with its Internet on the fritz could hold web-based exams. Now we know: they can’t.

After assuring students that they’d have their Internet issues — at least on-campus — sorted out in time for exams, Rutgers-Camden (and presumably Rutgers-Newark too, since they’re on the same system… though we’ve not heard from them yet) students learned to their horror this morning that the school may have promised more than it could deliver when the Web crashed during a 1L exam.

As you may recall, both Rutgers locations are suffering from a prolonged bout with a mysterious hacker who left the school’s Internet connectivity crippled for over a month. When last we checked in with the schools, we mused that they should call the whole thing off and just use Bluebooks.

Sounds like we were right. Earlier this morning we received this tip:

I’m a 1L at Rutgers-Camden, we were supposed to log into the course page to download the exam and the university website crashed. The exam was supposed to start at 10, its now 10:22. Nobody can access the page. We are expecting an e-mail from the dean of students shortly.

Thankfully, the outage only lasted about 25 minutes. Still more than enough time to freakout a 1L, but in the grand scheme of things not so bad. Academic Records Dean Ed Rentezelas responded quickly to calm frazzled nerves:

Dear students,

There was a temporary problem with the law school website which affected your ability to access your exam(s). The problem has been resolved and you can now have full access to the system.

The exam administration system records the time that you access the exam, and you will have the full time allotted by your professor. If you continue to have any problems, please reply to this email.

The folks at Rutgers are having a rough go of it this year, but never underestimate the importance of an administration with a plan. Inconveniences — even massive ones — are going to happen, but when the school is prepared to act swiftly and say all the right things, it goes a long way.

Good luck down there everybody!

Hopefully by next year Rutgers New Brunswick will have invested in some firewalls.
