Law Graduates Share Hard-Earned Father/Son Achievement

So wholesome.

father son Teacher and student on a white background. Most of us know a classmate who followed in his father’s footsteps and went to law school. But how many of you know of a father and son that took the same step and enrolled in law school together at the same time? Texas A&M’s graduating class of 2024 has two students who knew each other well before any study groups were formed. From TAMU:

David Lawson and his son Shannon naturally share many of the same qualities, like a witty sense of humor, natural curiosity and an ability to not take themselves too seriously. They recently added to the list of things they share in common – graduates of Texas A&M University’s School of Law.

The Lawsons, who earned their degrees this May, say it all began with a text message.

…A text message? I’ve heard of some reasons to go to law school over the last few years: sitting for the LSAT as a joke and doing something with your unexpected good score, laundering your humanities undergrad into something that can be profitable, not to mention the old classic of going to work at your dad’s firm. But being swayed to study the law over SMS? Did they check off all of the other COVID hobbies they could have done first?

Strangeness aside, they supported each other throughout the process:

Despite the distance, the Lawsons often shared notes and compared grades. And in the spirit of friendly competition, they pushed each other to see who could complete assignments first.

“We thought we had a clear idea of what would happen while going through this program. What ended up happening was that my dad would always be ahead of me in every class, which was understandable [.]”

Making friends, studying, and getting through legal studies together can make you feel like you picked up a brother or sister in addition to a Master of Legal Studies. The Lawsons lucked out by having family with them from the start. Congrats!
