Stats Of The Week: Why, YLS, Why (Are You Only No. 5 In The New ATL Law School Rankings)?

Because job numbers.

Some might say that a law school ranking that places Yale Law all the way down at No. 5 is inherently unsound. On the other hand, if we are striving to create a usable measure of the relative success of schools in placing graduates in quality lawyer jobs, then the numbers are the numbers. This year, Yale’s stats were simply down, compared to both other elite schools and Yale’s own recent history:

  • Employment score dropped 4.8% (from 74.4% to 69.6%)
  • Federal clerkship placements dropped 9.3% (from 35% to 25.7%)
  • Biglaw placement dropped 3.13% (from 38.83% to 35.7%)

To be sure, if we wanted to create a ranking based on pure prestige or the output of eminent legal philosophers, then Yale would be the undisputed champion. But that’s not what we did.
