Law School Increases Security After Incident With Former Student

Members of this law school community must be understandably unsettled.

It’s a scary world out there. Every time there is another shooting or other violent incident in a place once considered safe — like schools or movie theaters — the repercussions can really be shaking. Given this heightened climate of fear, it is no surprise that one law school is reacting to two related incidents with beefed-up security.

Students at the University of South Carolina Law School recently received a letter from Dean Rob Wilcox describing recent incidents involving former USC Law student Craig Stanley, and the school’s response. WISTV has a description of the events:

Wilcox said Stanley entered the school on Wednesday and asked to see the associate dean, but was turned away when he was told she was unavailable. Staff, meanwhile, reported Stanley appeared to have a hammer in his pocket. Police came to the scene, but did not apprehend Stanley because he had already left the building

Several law school officials were notified about the incident, but the student body was not yet told.

Stanley showed up again on Thursday, Wilcox said, and law school staff members immediately contacted police. Wilcox said he then met Stanley at the entrance to the Dean’s Office.

“He was calm and did not at any time display a weapon when talking with me or threaten the general population of the law school,” Wilcox said. “Police responded to our call quickly and talked with the former student. They then discovered the concealed knife during their interview of him.”

Police arrested Stanley for breach of the peace, and he’s wearing a GPS device while on house arrest.

Members of the USC Law community must be relieved that, according to Dean Wilcox, the incident did not involve a direct threat to the law school, but still understandably unsettled. The dean indicated he has hired an additional daytime security guard.

Hopefully this measure, along with the dean’s forthcomingness on the issue, will reassure those at the law school.
